Tree of Life
Triptych, Assemblage of Post-Consumer Materials
48″ x 96″
This is the Angel Oak Tree, a live oak tree native to the SC low country, and reportedly the oldest living thing east of the Rockies. It is believed to be 1,500 years old and stands 65 feet, with a wide spread canopy. Developers wanted to create a 600-unit multi-family housing complex in the surrounding area, requiring them to clear thousands of nearby trees which have served as the Angel Oak’s natural protection for centuries..
Tree of Life is made from objects that represent our lives. The triptych is stylized in design and each section of color is outlined with black drinking straws collected by the staff at a restaurant in Columbia, to create a stained-glass look.
