Mortar & Pestle
Oil on Canvas
Mortar and Pestle was painted from a still-life, set up as a sight-size exercise in red, white, and green. A friend of mine studied at the Angel Academy in Florence, Italy, and we painted together using one of the class assignments as our inspiration. We worked for 4 months on our paintings, using all the steps in the academic approach including the wash drawing, dead coloring, 1st painting, 2nd painting, and glazing. Coming from an alla prima, or direct approach, to painting, the academic process was much slower and required long breaks in our work while we waited for the paint to dry between layers. It was a great learning experience.
