Assemblages

The Little Things Give You Away

I began creating Assemblages like the one in the video after entering an environmental contest.  The theme of the show was about landscapes, but as I scanned my city I became increasingly aware and alarmed by the amount of trash littering every venue. Wanting to bring attention to the problem, I immediately realized we are the problem, and decided to create a portrait instead. I chose to create a child’s face- symbolic of hope- because I believe we are also the solution.

I am currently working on a series of  Assemblages using post-consumer waste which is mostly non-recyclable. In other words, stuff we throw away every day without even thinking about it. My materials are plentiful and each Assemblage is a little history of our consumerism. Viewed at close range, the artwork looks like a pile of trash.  As the viewer steps back the image comes into focus to reveal a face, landscape, or object.

I hope to have the series finished by the Fall of 2010.
